BURBANK, CA — The garage doors at Parker Restorations are staying open. ABC officially announced on Thursday, April 30, 2026, that it has renewed its hit multi-cam comedy Shifting Gears for a third season.
The renewal comes as little surprise to industry insiders, as the Tim Allen and Kat Dennings-led sitcom recently concluded its second season as the network’s #1 linear comedy. The series has carved out a massive niche for itself by blending Allen’s classic sitcom charm with Dennings’ sharp, modern wit.
A Ratings Powerhouse
Since its debut in early 2025, Shifting Gears has been a foundational piece of ABC’s comedy block.
- The Numbers: Season 2, which aired between October 2025 and February 2026, consistently dominated its time slot. The season finale reportedly delivered the show’s best multi-platform audience to date, peaking at over 7.5 million viewers across linear TV and streaming.
- Streaming Success: Alongside the recently renewed Scrubs revival, Shifting Gears has become a “must-watch” title on Hulu and Disney+, particularly among viewers who missed the initial Wednesday night broadcasts.
Where We Left Off: The Season 2 Cliffhanger
The Season 2 finale, which aired in early February, left fans with plenty of questions to be answered in the upcoming season.
- Matt’s Grand Gesture: After a season of romantic uncertainty, Matt (Tim Allen) reunited with Eve (Jenna Elfman) following a last-minute dash to the airport—purchasing a seat next to hers to prove his commitment.
- Riley’s Dilemma: Meanwhile, Riley (Kat Dennings) found herself at the center of a complicated love triangle. After ending things with Andy (Jesse Williams), she was surprised by his return just as she was ready to explore a relationship with Gabe (Seann William Scott).
- Family Restoration: The core of the show remains the “restoration” of the father-daughter relationship between Matt and Riley, which continues to evolve as they navigate life under the same roof with Riley’s two children.
”Hop in, we’re driving to Season 3!” Tim Allen posted on Instagram shortly after the news broke. Kat Dennings added her own excitement with a simple, “See you soon!”
Production and Cast
The series-regular ensemble is expected to return in full for Season 3:
- Tim Allen as Matt Parker
- Kat Dennings as Riley Parker
- Seann William Scott as Gabriel
- Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch
- Maxwell Simkins as Carter
- Barrett Margolis as Georgia
While Jenna Elfman was initially a recurring guest, her character’s reconciliation with Matt in the finale suggests she may see even more screen time in the new season. Michelle Nader will continue to serve as showrunner and executive producer.
While ABC has not yet confirmed a specific premiere date, Shifting Gears is slated for the 2026-2027 TV season. Fans can likely expect a return to the fall schedule in October 2026 or a midseason launch in early 2027, depending on the network’s final programming strategy.
