BURBANK, CA — The cosmos is expanding. Adria Arjona, the breakout star of Andor and Hit Man, has officially joined the cast of James Gunn’s “Man of Tomorrow,” securing the role of the formidable alien queen Maxima.
The casting, confirmed on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, follows weeks of high-stakes screen tests at DC Studios. Arjona reportedly beat out a shortlist that included Sydney Chandler (Alien: Earth) and Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies) to secure the part. While fan speculation had long tied Arjona to the role of Wonder Woman, her casting as the “Queen of Almerac” marks a significant shift in the narrative direction for the upcoming Superman sequel.
Who is Maxima?
First appearing in 1989’s Action Comics #645, Maxima is the monarch of the planet Almerac, a warrior culture driven by a Darwinian pursuit of the strongest genetics.
- The Mission: In the comics, Maxima travels to Earth to seek out Superman as a genetically compatible mate to strengthen her royal bloodline.
- Adversary or Ally? While her initial interactions with the Man of Steel are often antagonistic—ranging from obsessive romantic pursuit to outright battle—she later becomes an anti-heroine and a member of the Justice League.
- The DCU Version: In Man of Tomorrow, Maxima is expected to serve as a wild card. While Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac remains the primary antagonist, Maxima’s arrival on Earth adds a “cosmic romantic tension” that complicates the lives of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
Production Kickoff: “Exodus” Begins
The timing of the casting is no coincidence. Principal photography for Man of Tomorrow is set to begin tomorrow, Friday, April 17, 2026, in Atlanta under the working title “Exodus.”
The Wonder Woman Question
Despite the Maxima confirmation, the “Arjona for Wonder Woman” movement hasn’t completely quieted. Some theorists suggest that Maxima might be a “one-and-done” role or even a cover for a larger debut, citing James Gunn’s penchant for misdirection. However, industry insiders suggest that Gunn is looking for an actress with a more imposing height profile (Corenswet stands at 6’4″) for the eventual introduction of Diana Prince.
Building Chapter One: Gods and Monsters
Man of Tomorrow is a cornerstone of the DCU’s “Chapter One,” acting as a narrative bridge between the 2025 reboot and the upcoming Justice League projects.
”Adria has that regal, dangerous energy that Maxima needs,” a source close to production told Variety. “She’s not just a love interest; she’s a powerhouse who could take David’s Superman to the limit.”
With Supergirl and Clayface slated for release later this year, Man of Tomorrow remains the anchor of the 2027 slate, currently scheduled to fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.
