LOS ANGELES — The coastal mysteries of Gibsons are set to continue as Fox officially renewed its breakout crime drama Murder in a Small Town for a third season. The announcement, made on Thursday, May 7, 2026, also revealed a major addition to the cast: veteran actor Peter Gallagher (The O.C., Grace and Frankie) will join the series as a seasonal regular.
A Reliable Performer
The renewal comes after a highly successful second season, which saw the series hit all-time highs in multiplatform and streaming viewership. According to network data, Season 2 improved on the show’s initial audience numbers by 11%, cementing its status as a cornerstone of Fox’s “cozy crime” programming.
”We love bringing this delightful mystery to Fox fans, and we’re thrilled it has continued to resonate,” said Brooke Bowman, EVP of Drama Programming at Fox. “We look forward to season three with our exceptional cast led by Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk, soon to include the incomparable Peter Gallagher.”
Enter Peter Gallagher: The New Adversary
Gallagher is set to portray Rod Finlayson, a character described as a “charismatic, uber-independent, and capable yet unreliable” figure.
His arrival at the Gibsons marina aboard his beloved boat is expected to serve as the primary catalyst for the new season’s drama. Producers have teased that Finlayson will act as a “newest adversary” for Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk), creating a sequence of upheavals that will challenge their deepening—and recently complicated—relationship.
Season 3 Expectations
The upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes, following the structure of the previous years.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the resolution of the Season 2 finale, which saw Karl Alberg finally propose to Cassandra Lee. The screen went black before her answer was revealed, a cliffhanger that Season 3 is expected to address in its opening moments.
Based on the nine-book series by L.R. Wright, the show has increasingly moved toward original storylines while maintaining the “Pacific Northwest Noir” atmosphere that has made it a fan favorite. With Gallagher joining the fray, the quiet paradise of Gibsons is about to get a lot more crowded—and a lot more complicated.
