BURBANK, California — DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has officially put to rest mounting online speculation regarding the fate of the live-action Booster Gold series, confirming that the comedic superhero project remains actively in the works for the burgeoning DC Universe (DCU).
The clarification came during a recent social media exchange on Threads, where Gunn was pressed by anxious fans about the status of several projects from the initial “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” slate that have suffered from prolonged periods of radio silence.
Replying directly to inquiries about the time-traveling hero and the Wonder Woman prequel series, Gunn provided a brief but definitive health check on the titles:
”BG [Booster Gold] is in development. PL [Paradise Lost] is in extreme development.”
Quelling the Cancellation Panic
The confirmation follows weeks of rampant cancellation rumors within the fan community. Speculation reached a fever pitch after online sleuths noticed that David Jenkins—the critically acclaimed creator behind HBO’s Our Flag Means Death who was tapped to write the Booster Gold pilot—had reportedly wiped mentions of the DC project from his social media bios and unfollowed Gunn on Instagram.
Jenkins himself had previously moved to de-escalate the panic, assuring fans that the script was “still in the pipeline.” Gunn’s definitive statement further solidifies that the project is secure at Warner Bros. Discovery, even if its timeline is moving slower than other frontline DCU properties.
The Impostor Syndrome Superhero
First announced in January 2023 during Gunn and Peter Safran’s massive DC Studios roadmap presentation, Booster Gold is being envisioned as a premium, comedic HBO/Max series.
The story centers on Mike Carter, a disgraced, down-on-his-luck former football star from the 25th century. Using a collection of stolen basic future technology—including a security robot named Skeets, a flight ring, and a forcefield belt—he travels backward in time to the modern day to pose as a high-profile superhero solely for fame, corporate sponsorships, and public adulation.
Gunn has previously expressed immense affection for the character’s unique narrative DNA:
- The Core Concept: “He’s a loser from the future who uses future technology to come back to present day and become a superhero so that people will love him,” Gunn previously explained.
- The Psychological Hook: “It is basically a superhero story of impostor syndrome.”
Finding the Right Fit in the DCU Pipeline
While Booster Gold is safely moving forward, it is operating on a different track than other projects. Gunn recently confirmed that he is not personally writing the series, delegating those duties to Jenkins’ team as he manages the larger macro-storytelling of the universe.
The slower lead time is standard for a deep-tier cult character like Booster Gold, allowing the writers’ room to fully map out an eight-episode narrative arc that seamlessly weaves into the broader world.
Though rumors have heavily linked Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani to the titular role following various industry sightings, DC Studios has stressed that official casting announcements will remain under lock and key until the script and showrunning infrastructure are completely finalized.
