LOS ANGELES — Lionsgate has officially staked out a prime summer sandbox for its next high-octane franchise expansion, locking in a June 4, 2027, theatrical release date for the highly anticipated action prequel, John Rambo.
The project represents a massive passing of the torch. Noah Centineo (Black Adam, The Recruit) is officially stepping into the military boots, red bandana, and iconic stainless steel combat blade popularized by Sylvester Stallone. Rather than a modern-day continuation, the upcoming film acts as a gritty origin story, exploring Rambo’s harrowing psychological transformation during his deployment in the Vietnam War—the defining crucible that directly precedes the events of 1982’s First Blood.
A High-Caliber Creative Contingent
Lionsgate isn’t pulling any punches behind the camera, assembling an elite team of action stalwarts to re-engineer the legacy franchise.
The film is directed by Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander, who previously partnered with Lionsgate on the 2022 wartime sleeper hit Sisu. The screenplay is penned by the writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam).
While Stallone is not appearing in front of the lens, he remains deeply embedded in the project as an executive producer alongside powerhouse Marvel alumni Anthony and Joe Russo’s AGBO banner.
”John Rambo is a mythic figure in cinematic history,” Helander noted in an early production brief. “To show the world how an idealistic young soldier was structurally broken and rebuilt into an apex warrior by the theater of war requires an uncompromising, visceral approach. We are honoring the weight of the original character while introducing a relentless new aesthetic.”
Harboring the Next Generation of Troops
The ensemble cast balances veteran character actors with rising international stars to flesh out Rambo’s early military circle:
- David Harbour (Stranger Things, Violent Night) will take on the foundational role of Colonel Samuel R. “Sam” Trautman, the mentor who originally recruits and shapes Rambo into an elite Green Beret unit asset.
- James Franco (127 Hours) joins the lineup in a highly secretive, undisclosed major supporting role.
- The expanded operational unit features an eclectic list of actors including Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong.
Navigating a Highly Competitive Summer Box Office
Lionsgate’s choice of the post-Memorial Day weekend frame places John Rambo in a high-stakes theatrical corridor. The studio is betting heavily on the franchise’s historical drawing power, which has collectively raked in over $820 million globally across five legacy installments.
Production has already wrapped on primary overseas locations, moving the film into a lengthy post-production window to fine-tune its dense combat choreography, period-accurate set designs, and heavy practical effects.
