LOS ANGELES — The King of Pop continues to shatter records decades after his prime. Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International announced that the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has officially cleared the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The monumental achievement secures the film’s place in cinema history as the very first biographical picture of any kind to surpass the billion-dollar benchmark. Even more notably for the business of Hollywood, it marks the first time in Lionsgate’s history that a title has hit the elusive milestone, cementing the film as the independent studio’s largest theatrical release of all time.
Dethroning Box Office Giants
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Graham King (the mastermind behind the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody), Michael has enjoyed an unprecedented theatrical run since exploding into cinemas in late April 2026.
The movie’s global tally currently sits at a cumulative $1.001 billion, fueled by:
- The Domestic Market: A powerful $371.8 million haul across North America.
- The International Market: A massive $629.8 million intake overseas, pushed over the line by an exceptional extended run in Japan.
By crossing the threshold, Michael has officially dethroned Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer ($975.8 million) as the highest-grossing biopic in history. It also easily surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody ($911 million) to claim the crown for the highest-grossing musical biography of all time.
A Seismic Win for an Independent Studio
For Lionsgate, which handled domestic distribution while partnering with Universal for international markets, the milestone represents a massive corporate victory. The studio’s previous highest-grossing release was 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which topped out at $865 million.
The achievement makes Michael the first film released by an independent studio to join the exclusive $1 billion club. It stands as only the second movie to hit the milestone in 2026, trailing just behind Universal’s animated juggernaut The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
“Michael’s success was driven by our phenomenal partnership with our remarkable filmmakers Graham King and Antoine Fuqua, the incomparable cast led by Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo, and Nia Long, and our successful collaboration with the Michael Jackson Estate,” Adam Fogelson, Chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a celebratory statement. “Audiences have embraced the film from the beginning, turning it into a unique cultural phenomenon in theaters around the world.”
Turning Modern Media Into a Thriller
The film’s theatrical dominance has triggered a parallel cultural phenomenon across digital media. Music industry analysts report that the biopic has supercharged Michael Jackson’s catalog across streaming platforms. Since the movie’s premiere, Jackson’s Spotify monthly listener count skyrocketed from 68 million to an astonishing 105 million listeners, briefly making him the number-one digital artist on the planet.
A significant portion of the film’s praise has been directed at its star-studded ensemble. The film features Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in an incredibly buzzed-about acting debut that captures his uncle’s distinct stage presence and vocal mannerisms.
Reflecting on the historic box office run, director Antoine Fuqua expressed deep humility regarding the global response.
“Reaching this extraordinary $1 billion milestone with Michael is a deeply humbling moment that celebrates the tireless dedication of our incredible producers, cast, crew, and partners,” Fuqua said. “This historic milestone is a testament to the enduring power of cinema to bring us together, and it is a chapter in movie history I will never forget.”
With the film already arriving on premium video-on-demand networks and physical media hits stores, the cultural and economic waves generated by Michael are positioned to echo through Hollywood for the remainder of the year.
