HOLLYWOOD — Could the long-lost “SnyderVerse” find a second life on streaming? A storm of speculation is brewing across the entertainment industry after Netflix’s international social media accounts dropped a cryptic teaser pitting Henry Cavill’s Superman directly against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam.
The online post, which quickly ignited fan communities, has reawakened a long-held fantasy among DC enthusiasts: a massive, heavyweight cinematic collision between the two godlike figures, bypassing traditional theatrical models entirely.
The Spark That Ignited the Web
The internet went into meltdown when Netflix France posted a high-profile graphic of Dwayne Johnson’s anti-hero facing down Cavill’s Man of Steel. The caption was a direct provocation to fans: “1 vs 1, who wins? BLACK ADAM, it’s available.”
While the post ostensibly served to promote the streaming arrival of the 2022 film Black Adam on the platform, the timing and choice of imagery immediately fueled intense industry chatter.
The teaser dropped right as director Zack Snyder began sharing cryptic, black-and-white portraits of his original Justice League cast—including Cavill—taken with his personal camera. Because Snyder has established a deeply collaborative relationship with Netflix, fans quickly connected the dots, wondering if the streaming giant is laying the groundwork to license or continue the defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU) timeline.
A Unfinished Promise
For many, the prospect of a proper Superman vs. Black Adam project represents unfinished business. In October 2022, audiences were shocked by a mid-credits cameo in Black Adam that saw Cavill step out of the shadows as Superman for the first time in years, promising a massive ideological clash between power and hope.
”It was a one-off deal negotiated directly with the studio at the time,” a film industry insider noted. “But before the paint could even dry on the billboard, the leadership shifted, and the entire timeline was wiped clean.”
Shortly after that cameo, James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins of DC Studios, opting to entirely reboot the universe with a younger cast, effectively closing the door on Cavill’s tenure in the mainstream theatrical space.
The Streaming Alternative
While Warner Bros. Discovery continues to push forward with its newly minted DC Universe in theaters, the enduring popularity of the old continuity on streaming platforms is hard to ignore. Black Adam and Zack Snyder’s library have consistently ranked in Netflix’s global Top 10 metrics following their licensing windows.
While legal and corporate rights make a full continuation incredibly complex, the relentless creativity of the internet has stepped into the void. Dedicated fans and digital artists have taken matters into their own hands, creating sophisticated, high-production concepts of what a streaming-backed showdown could look like.
Neither Netflix nor the actors’ representatives have confirmed any formal production plans, but in the modern landscape of fan-driven media, a simple social media post can often be the first ripple of a much larger wave.
