NEW YORK CITY — The “romantasy” phenomenon that took the publishing world by storm is officially headed to the small screen. During its high-profile 2026 Upfront presentation on Monday, May 11, Prime Video announced a formal series order for Fourth Wing, the adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling Empyrean novels.
The project is a collaborative powerhouse, bringing together Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and Kilter Films, the production company led by Fallout and Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.
The Creative “A-Team”
After a lengthy development process that began in late 2023, Amazon MGM Studios has solidified a creative team designed to handle the scale and intensity of the dragon-riding epic:
- Showrunner: Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House, Wednesday) has been tapped to adapt the novel and lead the production. She replaces previously rumored candidates to steer the series.
- Pilot Director: Lisa Joy will step behind the camera to direct the first episode, bringing her experience with high-budget, immersive world-building to the continent of Navarre.
- Executive Producers: Author Rebecca Yarros will serve as an executive producer alongside Jordan, Joy, Nolan, and Elizabeth Raposo.
“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios. “We are bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”
Basgiath War College Comes to Life
The series will follow the first book’s plot, centering on Violet Sorrengail, a twenty-year-old who intended to become a Scribe but is forced by her commanding general mother into the deadly Riders Quadrant.
Candidates at Basgiath War College live by a simple, brutal code: “Graduate or Die.” The show will explore Violet’s struggle to survive training, bond with a dragon, and navigate a high-stakes romance with the powerful and lethal wing leader, Xaden Riorson.
Strategic Importance for Prime Video
The Fourth Wing order is a cornerstone of Prime Video’s 2026 strategy, which leans heavily into established literary fanbases. It joins a “Romance & Fantasy” slate that includes:
- Off Campus: Premiere date set for May 13, 2026.
- The Rings of Power Season 3: Confirmed for November 11, 2026.
- Rose Hill: The Elsie Silver adaptation also announced this week.
While no casting announcements were made during the Upfronts, Michael B. Jordan told the audience at the Beacon Theatre that the team spent “considerable time” finding the right creative voices to ensure the adaptation lives up to the “BookTok” hype.
