LOS ANGELES — The Television Academy has officially fired the starting gun on the 2026 awards season. In an announcement broadcast from the Wolf Theatre in North Hollywood, presenters Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller unveiled the nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards—revealing a television landscape defined by dominant sophomore juggernauts, emotional farewells, and a massive, fresh wave of streaming newcomers.
While prestige television has occasionally drawn criticism for taking years-long breaks between seasons, this year’s crop of nominees proved that consistent, high-velocity production pays off. Leading the entire field is HBO Max’s medical powerhouse The Pitt, which secured an astonishing 25 nominations for its sophomore season. Right on its heels is the fifth and final season of Hacks, breaking comedy records with 24 nominations as voters prepare to throw a massive graduation party for Deborah Vance and her team.
The trophies will be handed out live on NBC and Peacock on Sunday, September 14, with beloved Law & Order icon Mariska Hargitay taking the reins as host.
The Drama Room: ‘The Pitt’ Anchors the Acting Grid
Fresh off its surprise Best Drama Series victory, The Pitt transitioned from a rookie upstart into an institutional powerhouse. The day-in-the-life emergency room drama completely monopolized the acting categories, capturing four of the seven Supporting Actress slots (including nominations for Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Sepideh Moafi, and returning winner Katherine LaNasa) and three Supporting Actor nods. Talisman Noah Wyle is once again the heavy favorite to repeat his victory for Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
However, the drama race is far from a foregone conclusion. With perennial heavyweight The White Lotus sitting out the eligibility window, Apple TV+ aggressively seized the vacuum with two massive freshman hits:
- Pluribus: The one-woman-against-the-hivemind thriller from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan pulled in a spectacular 18 nominations. Star Rhea Seehorn secured a highly celebrated nod for Lead Actress, instantly positioning her as the emotional favorite to take home the crown.
- Slow Horses and Your Friends & Neighbors: Apple rounded out its dominant drama showing with nominations for its veteran spy hit and its brand-new suburban thriller, ensuring a massive battle against established HBO Max contenders like The Gilded Age and the Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The category also welcomes the long-awaited return of Euphoria, which picked up seven nominations for its long-delayed third season, positioning Zendaya for a potential third Lead Actress trophy.
The Comedy Arena: ‘Hacks’ Chases History as ‘The Bear’ Regroups
Over on the comedy side, Hacks rewrote the record books. Its 24 nominations broke the comedy-series single-season record set just twelve months ago by The Studio. Legendary star Jean Smart has won Best Lead Actress for all four previous seasons of the show; a victory this September would secure a historic five-season sweep.
Yet, the traditional comedy categories are seeing intense structural friction. While FX’s The Bear safely secured a Best Comedy Series nomination, its cultural dominance felt the heat from Apple TV+’s breakout horror-comedy Widow’s Bay. Directed by Hiro Murai, the freshman series burst onto the scene with 19 nominations, including a Lead Actor nod for Matthew Rhys.
The supporting categories also yielded some of the morning’s loudest cheers:

A Star-Studded Anthology Resurgence
The Limited, Anthology, and Movie fields have rarely looked this crowded with cinematic pedigree. Leading the pack is the second iteration of Netflix’s Beef, which locked in 16 nominations. The anthology’s entirely fresh cast of grudge-holders—Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and Charles Melton—all successfully converted their performances into acting nominations.
They face fierce competition from Hulu’s buzzy biographical drama Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Peacock’s thriller All Her Fault (which yielded a Lead Actress nod for Sarah Snook), and HBO Max’s crime drama DTF St. Louis, which landed an incredibly rare triple-nomination for supporting actors Jason Bateman, David Harbour, and Richard Jenkins.
Even the guest and variety categories managed to cook up spectacular headlines. The late, legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner earned a posthumous nomination for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his celebrated cameo on The Bear—marking an emotional 50-year return to the Emmy ballot after his historic wins for All in the Family in the 1970s.
With traditional broadcast television continuing to find a rare, resilient champion in ABC’s Abbott Elementary (which scored seven nominations for creator-star Quinta Brunson), the 2026 Emmys are shaping up to be a spectacular collision of small-screen eras. Traditional network pacing, modern streaming prestige, and departing legends are locked in a dead heat, and television fans will have to wait until September to see who walks away with the gold.
